Blogivierainamme tänään ovat Päivi ja edesmennyt ravuri Herkku - suuri hevonen pienessä koossa.

Today's guests in the blog are Päivi and late trotter Herkku (Delicacy) - great horse in small size.

Päivi, how many horses do you have in your stable?

Tallissa on seitsemän hevosta, kolme suomenhevosta ja neljä lämminveristä. 

At the stable there are seven horses, three cold-blooded Finnish horses and four warm-blooded.

Miten tienne Herkun kanssa kohtasivat?
How did your paths cross with Herkku?

Omistaja otti yhteyttä talvella 2013 ”projektihevosesta”, joka ei osannut ravata, mutta oli kuitenkin ”kilpailukunnossa”. Omistaja halusi kokeilla hevoselle uutta paikka ja sitä kautta saada se nopeasti radalle kilpailemaan.

The owner contacted us in the winter 2013 about a "project horse ", who did not know how to trot, but was still "in racing condition ". The owner wanted to test a new stable and by that way get the horse quickly to start.

How was your journey with Herkku?

Ruuna tuli yöllä tammikuussa 2013. Aamulla näin sen ensimmäisen kerran ja järkytyin… Se oli pieni ja hermostunut eikä luottanut ihmiseen.

The gelding came at night in January 2013. In the morning I saw it for the first time and was shocked ... He was small and nervous and did not trust humans.

Seuraavana päivänä hevonen laitettiin valjaisiin. Pitäähän se uusi hevonen ajaa ja ”testata”. Kun hevonen laitettiin valjastuspaikalle ja vedettiin kärry perään, se pakeni paikalta. Suu auki katsoimme miehen kanssa toisiamme ja ihmettelimme mitä tapahtui… Tässä siis oli hevonen, jonka piti olla viimeistelyä vaille ”starttivalmis”.

The next day, the horse was placed in the harness. Of course a new horse has to be run and "tested". When we put him at a place to be harnessed and pulled the cart behind him he fled the scene. With mouths open we stared at each other with my husband and wondered what happened ... So this was the horse that was supposed to be "ready to start" lacking only the final touch.

Soitettiin omistajalle ja mies kysyi tämä hevonenko viittä vaille kilpailuvalmis, miten on mahdollista kun pakenee kärryjä? Punastellen kuuntelin mieheni avautumista ruunasta omistajalle. Omistaja kuunteli ja totesi, että siinä teille projekti. Tehkää siitä kilpahevonen. Haaste vastaanotettu.

Then we made a call to the owner and my husband asked how is this horse ready to start when he escapes carts?  I listened blushing when my husband opened himself about the gelding to the owner. The owner listened, and concluded that there is a project for you. Turn it into a racing horse. Challenge received.
 
Piti soveltaa valmennusta, koska ruuna ei suostunut rauhoittumaan valjaissa, ja oli niin rauhaton ja hätäinen ettei kävellyt kärryjen edessä ollenkaan. Perähevosena sitten liikutettiin kevät, kesällä mentiin radalle. Siellä hevonen toimi paremmin valjaissa kuin kotona. Elokuussa Herkku ilmoitettiin koelähtöön, jonka se läpäisi niukin naukin. Kovasti se stressasi. Omistajan toiveesta ilmoitettiin  starttiin vaikka omasta mielestä hevonen ei ollut starttikuntoinen. Se startti meni hylkyyn. Loppuvuodesta 2013 ajettiin vielä pari starttia, ja jokin siinä hevosessa sanoi, että kapasiteettia on kunhan saadaan asiat kohdilleen. Luottamusta oli tekemiseen ja hevoseen ja omistaja antoi työrauhan. 

We had to use applied coaching, because the gelding did not want to settle down in the harness. He was so restless and hasty that didn't walk in front of the cart at all. Then he was moved behind other horses' carts as a stern horse during the spring. In the summer we went to the track. The horse was better in harness there than at home. In August he was announced to participate in a trial start which he scarcely passed. He stressed very much. According to the owner's wish we announced the horse to a start even though we didn't think he was ready for that. And the horse was rejected in that start. Towards the end of 2013 we drove yet a couple of starts, and something about the horse told us that he has capacity all right as long as we get every detail in order. Confidence we had both in the work and in the horse and the owner gave us labor peace.
 
Seuraavan vuoden aloitus tapahtui maaliskuussa. Hevonen oli ok, ja omistajan kanssa sovittiin, että hevonen ilmoitetaan huhtikuun alkuun Vermoon ja jätetään se sinne ”etelään”, koska omistajan kotiseudulta on paremmat kilpailumahdollisuudet (= lyhyemmät kilpailumatkat) kuin ”susi-rajalta”.

The next year's start was in March. The horse was ok, and we agreed with the owner, that we announce the horse to Vermo in Helsinki in April and leave it there "in the south" because there were better racing possibilities (= shorter race distances) at the owner's home region than from the "wolf-boarder".

Huhtikuun alun startissa hevonen oli hyvä! Ja hyvillä mielin olimme saattamassa ”projektin loppuun”. Kun riimunarun annoin hevosta hakeneille miehille, fiilis muuttui. Hevonen tärisi ja pälyili epäluuloisesti, mutta nöyränä heppana lähti miesten perässä kohti ”uutta valmennuspaikkaa”. Startin jälkeinen hyvä fiilis muuttui suruksi.

In a start at the beginning of April, the horse was good! And in high spirits we were "finishing the project." When I gave the halter to men picking up the horse my feeling changed. The horse was shaking and glanced suspiciously. But as a humble horse he went after the men towards the "new training places". My good spirit after the start changed into sorrow.
 
Kahden kuukauden kuluttua – kesäkuun alussa - omistaja soitti eräänä iltana ja sanoi: hevonen on X:n kyydissä, käykää hakemassa se yöllä heidän tallilta. Siinä vaiheessa ei voinut todeta muuta kuin että kyllä käydään hakemassa – muutenhan se olisi ollut jo hevosen heitteillejättö. Mies kävi sen yöllä hakemassa ja kun aamulla näin hevosen niin itku pääsi. Miten hevonen voi mennä kahdessa kuukaudessa niin huonoon kuntoon? Se oli kuitenkin kilpailukuntoinen, kun jätettiin se etelään. Se oli aivan järkyttävää. Hevonen oli surullinen, apaattinen pikku ruuna, joka katseli karsinasta. 

After two months - in early June - the owner called one evening and said that the horse is in X's car, go pick him up at night in their stables. Well, that was not the time or place to say other than yes, we will pick him up - else it would have been horse's neglect. My husband went to pick him up during the night and in the morning when I saw the horse I couldn't help crying. How can the horse go in two months to such a poor state? It was, however, in racing condition when we left him in the south. It was quite shocking. He was a sad, apathetic little gelding who looked from his pen.

Veimme sen tarhaan, samaan jossa se oli ollut jo aikaisemmin. Ja voi sitä riemua! Ruuna haisteli ilmaa, otti pukkilaukkaa ympäri tarhaa, piehtaroi ja välillä katsoi meitä tarhan portilla. Tuntui, kuin se olisi tullut kotiin, vaikka ei ollutkaan meidän oma. 

We took him to the paddock, the same where he had been in the past. And what a joy! The gelding sniffed the air, took a buck galloping around the shelter, tumbled and looked now and then at us in the shelter gate. We felt like he had come home, even if he was not our own.

Rapsutustuokio / scratching moment

Hevonen oli siinä kunnossa, että ensimmäiseksi veimme sen eläinlääkärille ja saimmekin oivat kotihoito-ohjeet. Säännöllinen selän ja mielen hoito alkoi tuottaa tuloksia.

The horse was in a state where we at first took him to the vet and got good home care instructions. Regular back and mental care began to produce results.

Syyspuolella ajettiin pari starttia, ja joulukuussa alkoi tuntua jo hyvältä.

In September a couple of starts were driven, and in December we began to feel good already.

Vuosi 2015 oli ”meidän vuotemme”, ruunalla startattiin koko vuosi säännöllisesti. Lähdöt olivat kovia, menestystäkin tuli. Pienet palkinnot eivät tosin palkintopottia kasvattaneet, mutta ne kokemukset ja tunnekuohut! Erään hyvin menneen startin jälkeen omistaja tuli ja sanoi, että hän sai ruunasta hyvän tarjouksen, mutta miettii, hyväksyykö hän sen. Hän ei hyväksynyt tarjousta - onni oli puolellamme.

The year 2015 was "our year", the gelding started on a regular basis throughout the year. The starts were hard but success came nevertheless. However, small rewards didn't much increase the prize pool, but the experience and the roaring feelings! After one good start the owner came and said that he received a good offer of the gelding, but consideres if he accepts it. He didn't accept the offer - the luck was on our side.

Voittajan elkeet / winner's gestures

Hevonen antoi aina kaikkensa, se halusi palvella ihmistä. Sitä piti vain muistaa käsitellä rauhallisesti ja kiireettömästi. Jokailtaiset selän lämmitykset ja jalkojen käärimiset kuuluivat asiaan. Loimitus päivittäin, koska jos vähänkin kävi kylmä, ruuna meni jäykäksi selästään. Se oli opetusvaiheessa kuulemma kaatunut ojaan kärryjen kanssa. Selkää ei ikinä tutkittu, mutta siellä saattoi olla ”isompaakin murhetta”. Tuntui hurjalta loimittaa myös kesällä...

The horse always gave his everything, he wanted to serve people. We just had to remember to handle him calmly and unhurriedly. Nightly back heating and leg wrapping were relevant. Warping was necessary on a daily basis, because if he got even the slightest cold, he got a stiff back. Apparently, he had crashed into a ditch with a cart in teaching phase. The back was never examined, but there could be a "bigger sorrow". I felt crazy to warp him even in the summer...


Raveissa tuli käytyä yksin ja toisinaan sain kavereita mukaan, kiitos siitä heille. Mukavampaa on olla reissussa kavereiden kanssa kuin yksin. 

To the races I went alone, sometimes I got help from friends, thanks to them for that. It it much nicer to travel with friends than alone.

Vuosi 2016 alkoi rikkinäisesti mutta lupaavasti. Kesällä hevonen oli hyvä, mutta meni vähän huonoksi viimeisessä startissa. Kuukausi sitä ihmeteltiin, ja sitten vietiin klinikalle. Näytin eläinlääkärille, että ultraa tuo jalka. Eläinlääkäri katsoi ja sanoi, että tuossako on vikaa. Kyllä, vastasin. Ja siellä oli vikaa niin paljon, että oli armeliasta päästää hevonen vihreämmille laitumille.

The year 2016 began a little broken but promising. In the summer the horse was good, but went a bit bad in the last start. We wondered about that during a month, and then brought him to the clinic. I asked my vet to ultrasound that foot. The vet looked and asked if that was the trouble. Yes, I replied. And so much was wrong in the leg that it was merciful to let the horse go to greener pastures.

Viimeisenä aamuna käärin hevosen kilpailumatkoilla tutuksi tulleeseen loimeen ja talutin traileriin. Ruuna varmaan tiesi minne matka käy, sillä se oli erittäin rauhallisen ja seesteisen oloinen.  

In the last morning I warped the horse in a way familiar from the races  and leashed him to the trailer. The gelding probably knew where he was travelling, because he was very quiet and serene.

What were the best properties of Herkku?

Kilpahevosena sillä oli suuri sydän ja kultainen kilpailupää. Muut ominaisuudet olivat herkkyys, nöyryys, palvelualttius, hyväksyntä, ja luottamus. Kunhan sen luottamuksen ensin sai.

As a racing horse he had a big heart and a golden competition head. Other features were sensitivity, humility, service-mindedness, acceptance, and trust. As long as the trust was first received.

What did Herkku teach to you?

Sen miten upeita eläimiä hevoset ovat, mitä ne kärsivätkään meidän takiamme, miten hyväksyvät kaiken mitä eteen tulee. 

How amazing animals horses are, what they are suffering because of us, how they accept everything that comes forward.

Luulen, että ruuna oli kohdannut reissuillaan sellaista kohtelua, jota ei toivo minkään hevosen kokevan. En edes halua tietää mitä, mutta se luottamuksen puute ihmiseen alussa oli surullista.

I think that the gelding had encountered on his travels the kind of treatment that could not be hoped for any horse to experience. I do not even want to know what, but the lack of trust in humans in the beginning was sad. 

Tekisit varmaan saman uudelleen vaikka tietäisit, että loppu on surullinen. Vai tekisitkö?
You would probably do the same again even if you knew that the end is sad. Or would you? 

Olisi selkä pitänyt tutkituttaa aikaisemmin, koska luulen, että vika mikä tuli jalkaan oli lähtöisin selästä. Oli kuitenkin hienoa työskennellä tällaisen hevosen parissa, paljon työtä, paljon tunteita. Olen miettinyt monta kertaa, että tässä taisikin käydä niin, että hevonen valitsi valmentajan eikä valmentaja hevosta…

The back ought to have been examined earlier, because I think that the problem which came to the foot was coming from the back. However, it was great to work with such a horse, a lot of work, a lot of emotion. I have wondered many times that maybe the horse chose the coach instead of the coach choosing the horse...
